David Conner & Associates was commissioned to design the landscape architecture for the area surrounding two residential housing buildings on the Campus of the University of South Florida. The project included realigning pedestrian sidewalks, creating outdoor seating and dining areas, and situating bicycle storage facilities. During the design phase, DCA discovered that the typical bench and chair seating found on the campus was largely unused by students. Students preferred less conventional places to eat, rest, gather, or study. The conclusion was a series of wide sidewalks linking outdoor spaces where concrete blocks, walls, benches and bollards offered flexible opportunities to sit and eat lunch, lean against while waiting for friends, or laying on while resting.

Re-establishing emergency access to the buildings, easing the maintenance services access, making convenient student move-in and move-out considerations, as well as daily trash removal and utility relocation coordination was carefully planned as a part of the final solution.
